Progress Report, March 2008 Harpur Community Health Centre, Sadat City from Rachael James.
Dear friends and sponsors,
I am writing with an update on progress on the new health centre in Sadat City. First, a quick word of introduction: I joined the Diocesan team last month and am working on fundraising and project evaluation. Please do get in touch if you would like further information, reports, pictures, etc. My contact details are below.
There has been considerable progress, but we have been hampered by a huge increase in the cost of building materials in Egypt. This has pushed up the overall cost of the project and means we are hard-pressed to bring in funds as quickly as they are being spent (see next page). With further inflation in view, it is urgent to raise the remaining funds as quickly as possible.

The basic structure has now been built and plastering is complete. The contractor is starting work on the next stage of finishing (painting, lighting, electricity, plumbing).
-
Sandra Strauss, our midwife, has been training the new nurses and she and Dr. Nermin have begun work in the antenatal care clinic, in the temporary clinic in Sadat City.

Bishop Mouneer opened a nursery school this month catering for 35 children, including seven with special needs. Two imams and three teachers from local Islamic schools attended, as did the deputy head of Sadat City Development Organisation. The nursery, run by the wives of the two doctors who run the temporary health clinic, is helping to build community relations ahead of the opening of the health centre.

Our quality manager, Mr. Thabet Ibrahim, has visited hospitals in Cairo and elsewhere to benchmark our quality standards. He and Dr. Michel Fahmy, medical consultant for the project, are developing a quality management plan and have contracted a consultant to give expert advice.
As the photographs show, the building is now taking shape. Around it, the area is gradually taking on a character of its own, with a gleaming new bank next to our hospital, and a mosque on the same square. A new university faculty and a fire station are just across the square. As new trees are planted, greenery is starting to appear in the desert.
We thank the several generous donations and would ask that you please pray as we urgently need funds to keep the process moving. We are building as fast as money comes in, besides making arrangements for purchasing medical equipment.
With thanks and best wishes,
Rachel
