Centenary celebrations - report

The day with the diocese was most humbling, joyful and moving.  Started by gathering around the Cathedral before 8.0 am where a convoy of buses, mini buses and cars carrying people from all over the globe with half a dozen from Singapore and some from Korea, drove two and half hours to Sadat City (a newish city off the main Cairo-Alexandria road) we arrived to a welcome by  children from the Episcopal school in Menouf with city officials and the new Director Dr Michel Awad (ex Deputy Director of  Harpur Menouf hospital), After the revelling the commemorate stone by the Bishop and deputy minister of health, we had some presentations, speeches including one from the deputy to the Mufti ,as the Mufti was taken ill that morning, we had a tour around the new hospital which at present is only one floor with only 8 -10 beds, two operating rooms and outpatient medical centre and a mobile health unit. We drove further an hour an half through small villages’ roads to Menouf, more presentations, speeches and a tour around the newly renovated hospital which has transformed the old one completely.

Early evening we attended a very moving thanksgiving service  attended by  locals, staff and at least 40  doctors  and engineers (American, Irish, Australian doctors, nurses who travel and work and train in Menouf and assisted in the establishing of the new hospital.   JW

Menouf has two educational institutions run by the Episcopal Church:

1) the Episcopal Primary School and

2) an adult education programme, (an off-campus Programme of the Centre for Adult and Continuing Education of the American University in Cairo.)

The Primary School, founded some 70 years ago, has a high reputation in the community. The rebuilt 4-storey building was officially opened by the Governor of Menoufiya in 1977.

There is a Primary School which has a large pre-school section, with children aged three to five enrolled in two Nursery, two first-year Kindergarten and two second-year Kindergarten classes. The maximum class size is 40 children, so there are up to 320 children in this section of the school.

The Head Teacher for the pre-school, is responsible for all pre-school classes and the staff of 10 teachers. Primary school classes range from Grade One to Grade Five, with 2 classes for each grade. The total number of pupils is around 375, so with the pre-school numbers the total roll is about 700 children. The primary school staff totals some 25 teachers. As well as core subjects, the School offers computer classes, art and music. In the annual music competitions, the pupils have almost invariably won in Menufiya and have then competed at Republic level against schools from all over Egypt. Academic success each year in the government exams has also marked the school as one of high quality.

The Adult Education Programme began in June 1998. The Community Service Centre in Menouf, run by the Episcopal Church, has a contract with the American University in Cairo to offer courses in General English, Computer Studies and Business Administration.

Through a generous grant from the Irish Embassy, a well-equipped computer lab was installed, and computer courses began in April 2001. Recently, an internet link has been added. Oversight of the Centre's staff and responsibility for its work lie with Miss Jeanette Grimmer (Instructor/Coordinator) and Mr. Emad Fawzy (Administrator/Treasurer). All staff are part-time instructors approved by the American University in Cairo, and attend inservice training workshops. Their quality is demonstrated by their being placed on the teaching honour roll on a number of occasions. On the most recent honour roll, four of our Menouf instructors were listed: Mr. Sameh Naim (Computer Studies), and Mrs. Vivien Badih, Mr. Wael Sharaf El Din and Miss Jeanette Grimmer (General English).
